Living the Worship Cycle as a TEAM

Our Campaign Worship Cycle Team has begun!

Last week I met with 5 people from my local church (we have approximately 100 people in attendance) who have been part of the worship team in one way or another in the past. As the 'Inspiring Worship Services Coach' I perceived that together we would make a "3 coloured team" and if we would all rise to the challenge of working closely together, could see increased fruitfulness in our worship services.

This is very exciting to me personally, for I have often felt that although on paper we have a 'team' - we have for the most part operated in a disjointed, non-cohesive way. The thought of not just 'doing worship services' with the team doing what the worship leader 'tells them to' but having a focussed, balanced team is very encouraging. I have always bauked at the thought of having new songs or ideas in a worship service, not sure of what would be effective, but now there is the opportunity for all ideas to be tested and understood by the team as being something worthwhile so that if we are going to do something, we are going to do it with all we've got.

For our first meeting we set aside a couple of hours and worked through the first 16 pages of the Worship Workbook. We did our Colour Profile (page 15) and I was delighted to find that together we did indeed make a balanced 3-colour team!

Although some in the team were not very familiar with NCD 'jargon' nor with the principles themselves, in that short space of time, there were significant principle-oriented revelations for us. When we stopped and considered the cart (pages 84-86 of Color Your World with NCD) light bulbs starting flicking on - we have considered in the past why there is such a strong tendancy to have passionate spirituality as our minimum factor, and in this meeting we realised that our church is currently experiencing a 'square wheel' phenomonen - many seemingly 'dispassionate' people have come to our church, having been burnt out in ministry elsewhere, or hurt by churches that haven't known how to help them grow and heal from personal tragedies- we could see that if these seemingly 'square' wheels were able to be helped to be reshaped by God the great healer, they would, in time, become rounder, more fruitful people and a whole new lease of life would enter our church.

We realised that our approach to worship needs to, for the time being, focus on providing an environment of encouragement and drawing people to the One who can heal all wounds. I'm a great one for the goodness of God - "correcting love" is a forte of mine - however, it's a sobering experience to realise that instead of needing a kick up the proverbial backside, there are a lot of our people needing to be "wooed" into the arms of God the healer.

Instead of private musings and conspiracy theories that often get developed in our own minds, we spoke and tested our perceptions as a TEAM.

I am looking forward to meeting more so that not just our perceptions re why our church is where it's at are tested, but creative ideas from the throne room of God are shared, tested, agreed upon, sharpened, and carried out and our small church finds ourselves in the very presence of God every time we meet.

Our next Worship Cycle Team Meeting for the Campaign is Sept 10 - I'll keep you posted!
