Early observations of the Canadian Church

Categories:
It is now seven months since I arrived to empower Canadian Church leaders to use NCD with increasing effectiveness. I have had contact with leaders from over 20 different denominations and seen many a Profile Plus.

Perhaps the most striking initial observation is that many churches are low in the question: "I experience the transforming influences faith has in the different areas of my life." It has produced some very spirited discussions:

- How spiritually mature are those who have been long in the faith but do not see it as important that faith meets current daily life?

- How many people are unwilling or unable to share their faith, not because they are unable to articulate their faith, but because they have no current testimony of transformation and growth?

- What is the impact of this on a church's attempt to engage evangelistically?

- Are believers actually expecting to see God at work in their own lives, or are they desensitized?

To my great joy I see denominational leaders really wanting to wrestle with this issue.

Faith and connection with life - where are the holistic groups?

This is a worrying low point in Canadian churches, Ian - but I wonder whether it may be true in many Australian congregations. Church life traditionally may not be structured to facilitate integration of faith and life, or to connect people together. What are the small groups like in these Canadian churches? I am not speaking here as if we do it better!

Good Questions!

The last question, "Are believers actually expecting to see God at work in their own lives, or are they desensitized?" is a good question for us all to be asking ourselves. Its a question I believe confronts Western Christianity in a major way but perhaps is not being answered with as much urgency.

I suppose an another could be, have believers become sensitized to the point where they don't believe it is possible for them to have the same kind of interactive relationship with their God in the same way Moses, Elijah, Peter and Paul did? And what would a relationship with God look like if it was?

Its encouraging to hear that churches are asking that question and it'd be great to hear the progress they are making as a result of asking that question.
